Q. What type of foods should one trying to loose weight take
and which ones should one avoid?
A. sugar and excess starchy, empty carbs - ex. soda, candy,
cookies, juice, yogurt, ice cream, chips, bread, pasta,
rice (eat small amounts) fruit by itself - combine it
w/ proteins and or fats

Q. I,m 50 yrs old and in good shape. I play basketball 2 to 3
nights a week, if I don't I run 3 miles.I do sets of pushups,
and crunches. My abs are stuck in limbo. I can't seem to
improve any more in that area. Can you help me?
A. I sure can Mark... here are a few quick tips:
1. stop storing new fat
2. burn off existing fat
3. strengthen, tighten, tone and reshape the abs by performing
progressive ab exercises

Research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce
the risk of heart disease. The best sources of these nutrients
are certain types of fishfish, including albacore tuna,
bluefish, trout, and all kinds of salmon. But if you're a
vegetarian, or if you just don't like fish, there are other
food sources of omega-3 fatty acids:
- Leafy green vegetables (e.g., spinach)
- Tofu
- Ground flaxseed
- Canola oils
- Olive oils
- Flaxseed oil
- Walnuts
Most people aren't getting optimal amounts of omega-3 fatty
acids (EFA). The classic symptom of EFA deficiency is dry,
flaky skin. Smooth, velvety skin is just one of many benefits
of EFA's. There are at least ten other important benefits of
EFA's in your diet:
- EFA's improve insulin sensitivity
- EFA's are required for absorption of fat soluble vitamins
- EFA's are essential for joint health

Genetically Modified Foods, Inc.

Many are not aware that genetically modified food is funded by drug
companies like Pharmacia and large, well-known corporations such as
tobacco giant Phillip Morris, which owns Kraft Foods. Concern over
the use of these altered foods has grown among many well-respected
scientists, as the effects of such foods are virtually unknown.

Vary your exercise (strength training and cardiovascular) program
by trying a new exercise and/or activity. You don't need to quit
your current program; just add something new and vary the order.
Studies show that walkers who occasionally ride the stationary
bike, for example, achieve a higher fitness level than those who
don't. This will also prevent boredom and help you overcome plateaus.

Healthy + Tasty Recipes

Veggie Patties
Makes: 4 servings
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup shredded zucchini
- 3/4 cup shredded carrots
- 1 1/2 tsp. onion powder
- 2 tsp. minced garlic
- 15 oz. can fat-free black beans, mashed
- 1/2 cup cooked rice
- 1/4 cup egg substitute
- 2 tbsp. fat-free bread crumbs
- 1 tsp. Italian seasoning
Directions:
- Preheat broiler on high heat. Line broiler pan with foil
and lightly spray with nonfat cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
(If mixture is too moist to shape, refrigerate 1 hour).
- Shape mixture into 8 patties and place on prepared pan.
- Broil 4 to 6 inches from heat for 5 to 6 minutes per side,
until lightly browned.
- Great as a sandwich on fat-free roll with lettuce, tomato,
and deli style mustard or fat-free honey mustard sauce.

- Calories: 190
- Fat: 0 g
- Cholesterol: 0 mg
- Protein: 12 g
- Carbohydrates: 34 g
- Fiber: 6 g
- Sodium: 37 mg
